However, entering the new year of 2017, with world information on the situation of global pepper production and trade in 2017, it is forecast that our country’s pepper export situation in 2017 will be a very difficult year, It can even be said that it will be more difficult than 2016 and previous years.

Export quality of pepper will be the most important factor affecting Vietnam’s pepper trade this year. And, quality control of raw pepper from production areas is also the most difficult thing the pepper industry has to overcome to maintain export turnover.

The demand for this spice in the world market is still increasing, but most of the world market does not accept to buy pepper that does not meet the quality requirements, in which the main focus is on the problem of pesticide residues.

This issue is not new, but in 2017 it will be focused and scrutinized more carefully, especially in markets where Vietnamese pepper is holding a good market share, such as the US and Europe. For example, the problem of metalaxyl chemical residues on pepper imported into the EU. Many years ago the maximum allowable amount (MRLs) of this chemical was 0.1ppm, but in 2017 that may not be the case, the European Commission EC is recommending the application of permissible MRLs of only 0.05ppm. .

According to official information from the European Spices Association (ESA), in a letter to the VPA and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development at the end of January 2017, ESA analyzed 799 samples of black pepper imported into the EU in 2016 and found only 799 samples of black pepper imported into the EU in 2016. 17% of samples had the maximum allowable residue level below 0.05ppm. If the situation of pepper production remains the same as in 2016, it means that in 2017, over 80% of Vietnam’s pepper will have little chance to enter the European market, which consumes approximately 40,000 tons. , accounting for 23% of Vietnam’s total pepper exports annually.

With the US market, where in the past few years, over 40,000 tons of pepper have been imported from Vietnam, accounting for 24% of Vietnam’s total exports, equivalent to Europe, it is also preparing to issue a series of new regulations. on the quality requirements of imported agricultural products, including pepper.

Quality is a vital issue of Vietnam’s pepper industry in the coming time, but how to manage quality in pepper production regions to meet export market requirements is still a matter of concern. The psychology of seeking high yields to earn high income at all costs of most pepper farmers in our country has led to the excessive use of fertilizers, pushing pepper plants into an unbalanced growth state, susceptible to infection. pests and then using pesticides to “save” their billions of dollars is a sad reality. Only when the majority of pepper farmers realize the seriousness of that poorly understood farming problem, change their behavior, and cultivate according to GAP, can the quality of pepper be improved and exported accordingly. can be sustainable.
