The delegation had a working session with the General Department of Agriculture (Ministry of Agriculture) Cambodia and Mr. Khann Samban, Director of Industrial Plants shared a lot of information about the development of pepper in the country of Thap Pagoda. Currently, pepper is grown in 19 provinces of Cambodia with a total area of ​​​​about 6,663 hectares in 2017 and an output of 20,253 tons.

In which, the 3 provinces that grow the most are Tbaung Khrmum (bordering with Tay Ninh) 2,720 ha, with an output of 14,960 tons; Ratanak Kiri province (bordering Gia Lai) 971 ha, output 1,234 tons; Kratie province (bordering Binh Phuoc) 728 ha, output 1,216 tons.

A representative of the General Department of Agriculture also said that the pepper area in Cambodia has only grown rapidly from 2014 to 2016. If in 2011 Cambodia had only 879 hectares, in 2014 it reached 2,653 hectares, in 2015 it nearly doubled to 2,653 hectares. 4,645 ha, increased to 6,124 ha in 2016 and slowed down to about 500 ha in 2017 due to falling pepper prices. Pepper varieties are mainly indigenous to Kamcham, Kampot; varieties of Vinh Linh and Loc Ninh of Vietnam; some areas planted with Sri Lankan varieties of India.

The soil in Cambodia is quite good, very suitable for pepper and long-term industrial crops. Because pepper in Cambodia developed after Vietnam, farmers here learn and draw a lot of experience in the process of selecting varieties, caring, harvesting and preserving products; pests and diseases are not many; The abuse of pesticides and chemical fertilizers is limited.

Especially, since 2015, a number of pepper growing cooperatives in Cambodia have been supported by NGOs in the implementation of the GAP process. At the same time, the organic and organic pepper growing area was initially built on a small scale, mainly in Kampot and Memot (Tbaung Khrmum province). Some foreign enterprises such as Switzerland bought this pepper at a high price of about 14 USD/kg.

Through the VPA survey, it was found that, because the area of ​​Cambodian pepper increased mainly in 2015 and 2016, from March 2018 this new area will be harvested, the output in 2018 is estimated at 25,000-28,000 tons. Cambodia’s pepper harvest time also coincides with Vietnam, around March of the solar calendar. VPA also acknowledges your proposal in the coming time to strengthen cooperation between VPA member enterprises and Cambodian farmers in the transfer of farming techniques and product consumption between the two sides.
