Brazil is expected to become the second largest pepper producer after Vietnam. In 2019, Brazil’s production is expected to reach 67,000 tons, including 64,000 tons of black pepper and 3,000 tons of white pepper. Similar to Vietnam, Brazil’s output is also expected to fall from the previous year’s estimate. Production is estimated to be reduced because Brazil has some old pepper gardens while new ones have not yet produced.
Indonesia is expected to occupy the third position after Vietnam and Brazil in pepper production. In 2019, Indonesia is expected to produce 25,000 tons of black pepper and 40,000 tons of white pepper. Compared to the previous year’s estimate, Indonesia’s output in 2019 is also forecast to decrease. The reason for the decrease in output is that many gardens in the main pepper growing areas are currently in a state of lack of investment and care. Indonesian farmers are no longer eager to maintain their pepper farms due to persistent low prices in recent years.
Indian pepper production is also expected to decrease compared to the previous year estimate. In 2019, India is expected to produce 45,500 tons of black pepper and 1,500 tons of white pepper. The reason for the decrease in production is that many farms in the main pepper growing regions of Kerala state were damaged by floods in mid-August. Many pepper gardens in Kerala have been washed away by floods and productivity has decreased. due to unfavorable weather. Wet weather conditions after floods have led to the appearance of harmful fungi on pepper plants.
China’s pepper production is estimated at 33,000 tons including 1,000 tons of black pepper and 32,000 tons of white pepper. Therefore, recording a 6% decrease in total production this year compared to the previous year.
In 2019, black pepper production in Sri Lanka will reach 26,000 tons and white pepper production is estimated at 700 tons, so this year’s total production is expected to reach 26,700 tons, recording a 44% increase over with 2018 estimates.
Pepper production in Malaysia is expected to increase year-on-year. In 2019, Malaysia is expected to produce 17,872 tons of black pepper and 6,128 tons of white pepper, so the total pepper production is estimated at 24,000 tons. Some pepper production areas in Malaysia are in a period of high productivity, so Malaysia’s output has increased slightly this year.
In terms of pepper exports in 2019, Vietnam continues to lead the world with a forecast that exports will reach 215,000 tons. It is expected that Vietnam’s exports will be larger than output as Vietnam has a considerable amount of inventory from the previous year. Following Vietnam is Brazil with an expected export of 57,600 tons, followed by Indonesia with an export of 37,000 tons. Next is Sri Lanka with 20,200 tons, India with 17,000 tons, Malaysia with 14,000 tons and China with 1,000 tons.
