According to a recent report by Nedspice, Vietnam has export 186 thousand tons of pepper as of August, equal to the output and import of this year. Exports in the fourth quarter will depend on the release of multi-year carry-forward inventories held by large investors and additional import volumes.

Usually, the harvest coffee in October urged intermediaries to liquidate pepper for coffee transactions. However, this year with lower inventory levels and the coffee harvest postponed until November, liquidation of pepper stocks could be significantly reduced.

High prices have prompted replanting and more intensive farming. Combined with favorable weather, this could lead to a larger crop in 2025. However, reduced acreage over the years and aging pepper trees reduce production potential until these New crops have just begun to be harvested.

Nedspice said the ratio of global inventories to demand is falling, pushing up prices and encouraging farmers to invest in maintaining and expanding their pepper farms.

In Brazil, the main harvest period has begun in the states of Para and Espírito Santo. Brazil’s July and August exports dropped more than 20% year-on-year, as the May-June harvest period in Espírito Santo was hit hard by harsh weather conditions at the beginning of the year.

Adverse weather conditions, including an unprecedented drought, have damaged crops in Brazil. A state of emergency has been declared in the state of Espírito Santo, including regulations limiting irrigation operations. Brazil’s pepper exports reached 45 thousand tons as of August, down 10% over the same period last year.

In contrast, Indonesia’s export volume increased by 67% as of August 24, mainly supported by a larger black pepper crop. Additionally, rapidly rising prices have triggered the liquidation of long-term stockpiles.
