Pepper is one of the key agricultural industries of Vietnam and has a solid position in many international markets. In 2024, with an output of 170,000 tons – Vietnam continued to maintain its position of producing and exporting the largest pepper in the world, accounting for about 40% of harvested output and 60% of the global export market share.
Despite the positive export growth, the US President – Donald Trump’s announcement of the application of a minimum tax rate of 10% to all imported goods and reciprocal tax 46% with goods imported from Vietnam makes pepper export enterprises worried. Pepper exports alone to the US in 2024 brought more than 400 million USD (nearly 10,500 billion VND).
Therefore, the high import tax will cause the orders that the pepper exporter has signed in advance, especially the contracts with the delivery term to August and September 2025 facing the risk of heavy losses.
At present, the 46% reciprocal tax is still unclear whether it is applied to pepper, so VPSA recommends that businesses need to monitor closely, and at the same time take the initiative to review the contract, adjust the export plan and diversify the market to reduce dependence on the United States.
