CMA CGM (France) also informed customers that Meishan Station has partially resumed service since August 18 and is expected to gradually return to operation in the coming weeks.

Two of CMA CGM’s container ships, Rivoli and Samson, are completing their cargo work and will leave Meishan station very soon, the French carrier added.

Meishan Station, which currently accounts for about 25% of container traffic through the Ningbo-Zhoushan port, was closed on August 11 after a worker was found to be infected with the Delta variant.

Ningbo – Zhoushan is the third busiest seaport in the world by container volume. According to the World Shipping Council, in 2019, the port handled about 26.49 million TEU containers. In 2020, the volume of containers passing through the port increased by nearly 5% to 28.72 million TEUs.

The partial closure of the world’s third-busiest container port has exacerbated congestion at other major Chinese gateways such as Shanghai, Xiamen and Hong Kong.

Before the new development, ships have diverted to the above seaports because it is not known how long the Ningbo – Zhushan port authority will maintain strict COVID-19 pandemic prevention measures.

This year, the global supply chain has been significantly disrupted following a series of crises such as container shortages and the Suez Canal incident. By June, the pandemic had also disrupted operations at major shipping hubs in southern China, including key ports in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, disrupting the flow of goods to the West. .
